System Of The Undead

Chapter 152: Jason’s New Power!

Chapter 152: Jason’s New Power!

Franklin barged into Jason and he instantly knew that there was something different about the man before him.

"You would leave Clementine to die even though we’re a team?" Jason asked but he didn’t have time to debate with Franklin because Clementine’s life was in danger.

The zombie was uncomfortable the moment Jason entered the room and this created an opening for Clementine to kick the zombie off her and scurry away.

"Both of you should leave, I have this handled..." Jason warned them but they didn’t know what to do because there was no way in hell Jason could handle such a zombie on his own.

Clementine was still approximately 10 meters away from him and 5 meters from the zombie.

She grabbed her gun and tried to open fire while the zombie was confused but the gun jammed.

The sound alerted the zombie of its environment and it launched right at Clementine who braced herself but in the blink of an eye, Jason had managed to cover that 10 meters and grabbed the zombie’s wrist, the hand responsible for the attack that would have claimed Clementine’s life.

"What the fuck just happened!?" Franklin exclaimed and Clementine looked equally horrified because this was nothing short of a superhuman feat.

"Jason... What happened to you?" Clementine questioned and Jason looked down at her with a smile.

"I have something to tell you," Jason muttered and Clementine gave him her full attention.

"What is it?" She asked, the zombie reaching to take a bite out of Jason.

"I’m Batman," Jason responded right before sending a round kick right into the side of the zombie’s head, the force sent it flying backwards.

[Fragment location found!]

Jason knew that this zombie must have been assimilated with the fragment a lot longer than the other zombie he had fought but he didn’t understand why it was so easy to fight it.

However, the zombie did something that Jason had never seen before, it took a battle stance.

"Clementine, there are a lot of things I need to tell you but right now, I need you to trust me," Jason said but Clementine wasn’t going to abandon him.

"I do trust you but a soldier never leaves a man behind," Clementine said, getting to her feet even though she had seen that Jason was more than capable of fighting this zombie.

"You’re so damn stubborn, no wonder Sam couldn’t deal with you," Jason teased her and Clementine’s face creased into a smile.

The zombie threw an item in their direction which Clementine ducked down to dodge but Jason didn’t move out of the way.

It crashed right into him and did not damage but Jason found out that the zombie was nowhere to be seen.

It was moving away from his position but unfortunately for it, Jason could track it with the radar on his map so there was no way that it could affect him.

Jason took a step and suddenly he fell on one knee, his breathing was heavy.

[Infection: 4%!]

[The more you use the nexus, the faster the infection spreads. You will cease to exist once the infection hits 100%!]

Jason wasn’t bothered by this because it would take quite some time for this to happen.

However, there had to be a solution and Jason had a guess.

[You can halt the spread of the infection by consuming more fragments.]

[Skill Unlocked: The Nexus!]

[MP Unlocked!]

[Cost: 5 MP per minute]

[Skill Type: Passive]

[Description: This is a skill that boosts the body’s stats]

[Upgradable: Yes]

[Total MP: 10/50]

Jason instinctively understood why he was weakened, he was running low on MP and should he exhaust the MP, the infection was likely to spread.

Jason was surprised at how different everything was, Chronos was truly manipulative.

"What’s wrong Jason?" Clementine asked, helping him to his feet.

Jason was getting a hang of his newfound powers so it would take a while before he became accustomed to it.

Jason was glad that his MP had unlocked because it meant that the supernatural element might exist.

He didn’t know how much he could evolve but the future was looking promising.

Jason wondered what would happen if the infection spread, would he be stronger or would he lose what makes him human?

He didn’t want to find out and knew he could survive for as long as he needed as long as he kept consuming those fragments.

"Nothing, I’m just a little tired..." Jason muttered.

"What are you?" Franklin asked to which Jason turned his head to see Franklin’s gun pointed at him.

"What are you doing Franklin?" Clementine asked.

"You should get away from him, Clementine, he’s clearly not human!" Franklin warned but Clementine had no intention of abandoning the man that had just saved her life.

"Not human?" Jason asked as he managed to get on his feet.

"I’m more human than you, you coward. You were about to leave Clementine to die," Jason reminded him and Franklin didn’t look bothered by this accusation

"Whatever it takes, I thought you understood this when you killed Elliot?" Franklin asked.

"We can have this discussion later, let’s get out of here before the zombie returns," Clementine warned and both men agreed with her.

Jason had somehow managed to drive away the zombie even though he would have preferred to finish it up for he didn’t know if the zombie was self-aware enough to learn from its failure as it did show signs of intelligence during the fight.

"You did good Jason," Clementine reassured him, Jason was glad that she wasn’t afraid of him nor saw him as a monster even though Franklin was the opposite. He understood where the man was coming from as he would act the same in his shoes.

They walked down the stairs, Jason being supported by Clementine with Franklin walking in front of them to make sure the area was clear.

Clementine didn’t hold a grudge that he was about to abandon her, she knew that the mission was always more important than the soldier and there were rare exceptions where the soldier did leave men behind.

They were horrified by what they saw on the second floor, the bodies of dismembered corpses lying around everywhere, guts hanging from the wall and they both knew that there was no way a human could do this.

If the fragment has been consumed and judging from the zombie’s evolution, it must have been quite some time, to say the least.

Jason noted that the essence of the fragment was leaking through the zombie, it hadn’t assimilated it like Jason had done.

Even though it did trigger an evolution, something told Jason that compatibility mattered to truly unlock the full potential of this fragment.

They were outside in no time and the car was waiting for them luckily.

"Franklin, you better keep your mouth shut on what you have seen here today. I don’t know what’s going on myself but Jason is on our side. There’s no doubt that we can make use of his powers for our good. You saw what he did there, didn’t you?" Clementine questioned, she knew that things weren’t as they seemed but Franklin should be smart enough to know that Jason wasn’t the enemy.

"I understand, I don’t know what happened to him but he might be our ace in the hole," Franklin composed himself and began to see how this could be beneficial to them in the meantime but he also had it in the back of his mind that Jason might become a rogue.

"Y-You guys did it!?" A voice from the vehicle exclaimed and Franklin nodded, boarding the vehicle with Jason and Clementine following suit.

They sped away without looking back but this new power of Jason, would it prove to be their salvation or doom?

-

Approximately an hour had passed since Sam encountered the doctor.

The man was bound on a chair with part of his skin missing, Sam was taking his time in torturing him because he wanted to get as much information as possible from him but the doctor showed surprising resilience.

"I have to admit, I didn’t expect you to last this long..." Sam said and the doctor didn’t give him a response.

He was either too weak or barely conscious to do so.

"All I want to know is how you’re able to do what you do and then I will let you be on your merry way," Sam said but the doctor was no fool.

He had learned a thing or two about Sam from Delta.

He has even managed to trick Delta by claiming Sam was outside the room prompting Delta to say the words that he did that coincidentally matched with the conversation that they had over the walkie-talkie.

"Y-You liar..." The doctor responded to which Sam sighed in exhaustion.

"I understand why you’re holding out. You’re scared that if you spill that I will no longer have any use for you and kill you..." Sam said, pausing as he took a couple of steps closer to the man.

"That might be true but what do you think happens if you’re of no use to me?" Sam asked in a tone so calm, it was terrifying.

"I need to understand what those things are and if you can find a cure," Sam asked and the man chuckled weakly.

"C-Cure? There is no cure... I don’t know what these things are, I was one of the doctors that worked on the project with Dr. Schneider. I was lucky enough to get my hands on his research before the world fell to shit..." The man said.

"Dr. Schneider..." Sam repeated, he knew this name.

This was the name of the man who was responsible for the current state of the world.

"Tell me everything you know about this man,"
