Author’s Note: This Chapter might be very dark for some. I kept it as vague as possible so I hope it isn’t too much.
You have been warned!
Blood.
He had seen it countless times.
However, it was never his.
The pools of red he had witnessed throughout his life had always belonged to someone else.
He had been responsible for them, certainly.
Did he kill them?
No.
His power never made anyone bleed. It made them struggle to breathe. Gasp for air as though none remained around them.
The times he had seen those red ponds were in the Temple. He simply remained hidden behind the large white pillars of the Temple, watching Ilyan’s training—that was what the High Priests called it.
Training.
Ilyan used to complain about it all the time. Eventually, it stirred Ren’s curiosity.
What do they even make him do that he hates training so much?
The omega regretted satisfying that curiosity almost instantly.
He had used the spell Ilyan had taught him not long ago—how to conceal his true eyes so he could see people in their real colours instead of the plain gray outlines he had known all his life.
"What are you even thinking about?"
One of the guards pressed his boot against Ren’s hand where he lay slumped on the ground.
The movement drew a soft groan from the omega although his gaze never left the drops of blood on the ground. It was his blood.
Red.
Fresh.
"Do you think the Imperial General will come save you?" the guard mocked, amusement flickering in his eyes as he looked down at the man in such a pitiful state.
Ren lowered his gaze to the floor. He didn’t think answering any of them was important.
Eventually, they would get bored. Eventually, they would stop. Yet they never did.
Once again, they struck him relentlessly. Once again, they had stripped him.
Why?
Ren ignored the reason.
Whenever his pheromones leaked beyond his control, they would use him, his pheromones, as an excuse for their actions, blaming their instincts and their second gender for everything. Alphas.
The omegas present would always be sent outside beforehand.
Dear Gods, please let this end.
Ren would beg silently, his lips trembling while alphas he didn’t even know touched his body and satisfied their desires, completely indifferent to the agony of the man beneath them.
Or perhaps that had always been their goal. To hurt him. To break him beyond repair.
Ren closed his eyes. He waited for Zayden. He didn’t want to think about anything else. Only the man who would surely come for him.
After Gods knew how long, the knights finally left the cell.
The omega curled into himself, trembling as tears streamed down his face.
He was strong. Undoubtedly so. Perhaps that was why they kept hurting him. And despite everything, Ren stubbornly refused to confess to being a spy sent by Hianshu.
Because it simply wasn’t true.
"You sure cry a lot compared to the last time I saw you." A familiar voice broke the silence.
Ren paused, slowly lifted his head and glared at the man standing before him.
To his surprise, Vincent had somehow found his way into the dungeon.
"How did you...?" He blinked to clear his blurry vision, unsure if he was imagining or seeing things.
Have I gone mad?
He wondered. Why would Vincent bother coming here?
"Does it really matter right now?" Vincent chuckled, glancing at Ren’s battered state. "Look at you."
There was no concern in his voice. Or perhaps he had seen Ren in such conditions so many times that he had become numb to it.
Like when a person who had seen too many deaths, or had killed too many, would become immune to it all.
"None of your concern. Don’t even pretend to care," Ren gritted through clenched teeth, fury flickering in his crimson eyes.
Vincent laughed, raising a hand to his mouth although it barely muffled the sound.
"So, this is the result of your so-called love. You are staying for a man who didn’t even bother coming to see in what state you might be."
"For someone who has never experienced love, you certainly talk about it a lot," Ren smirked.
He knew exactly where to strike. Where it would wound the man standing in front of him.
Vincent’s brows furrowed.
Then, only a moment later, a smile appeared on his lips.
"Just come back to Hianshu with me. You’re bound to suffer the same fate regardless of where you go, Raniel," he said with a careless shrug.
Then, Ren’s gaze narrowed.
"You should stop obeying the orders of someone who doesn’t even value you despite supposedly sharing your blood, don’t you think?" The omega scoffed.
"You!—" The comment drew Vincent mad. It was a very sensitive topic. His relationship with his mother had always been the one he had been unsure of the most.
If a person ever came up to him and stated that she wasn’t his mother, he would have believed it right away.
He had seen countless mothers. And no mother—no mother behaved like her. They cherished their children, unlike her.
"Try discovering love, Vincent. Life may not be short for you, but what if tomorrow is the day you stop breathing?" Ren’s smile was weak, soft but he could barely move his lips at will due to the countless punches the knights had thrown at him.
"Are you threatening me?" Vincent raised an eyebrow.
A dangerous glint flashed through his eyes. Something Ren couldn’t quite understand.
"Are you saying you will kill me?"
"Think whatever you want." Ren rolled his eyes.
"So are you coming?" Vincent asked, crossing his arms.
He was certain the answer would be a yes.
Ren shook his head, barely.
"Hah," Vincent scoffed, shaking his head. "You know I can just kidnap you, right? But this time, I want you to come with me willingly."
The omega raised an eyebrow.
"And why would I willingly go back to that hell, huh?"
"Because that place is your home, Ren," the alpha lowered himself, grinning. Slowly, he placed a hand on Ren’s bleeding cheek. "Look at what they did to you."
Ren snorted.
"Don’t speak as if this is the first time you are seeing me like this. I am used to it. You know it better than anyone else. And as you said, I am bound to suffer."
Vincent’s hand slipped from the omega’s pale skin.
"So leave me be. I would rather suffer in the name of love than in the name of a weapon."
"You are..." Vincent exhaled, slowly getting up. Then, he turned on his heels, exiting the hall.
The sound of his boots soon faded in the distance. And once again, Ren sobbed.
Uncontrollably this time.
How much longer could he endure this? He didn’t know.
Please come soon, Zayden. Before I lose faith in your love.
