Chapter 872 - 108: Coughing Blood
Chapter 872 - 108: Coughing Blood
"I have no objection," Cheng Ming said.
Yu Duo glanced at He Dawei, then at Shen Rui, and could only nod, "Alright, if you want to be the team leader, then go ahead. I have no objection."
Initially, she wanted to draw Cheng Ming over to her side, but she didn’t expect Cheng Ming to support He Dawei without hesitation. As for Shen Rui, this guy clings onto "Wei" every time he speaks, so he would definitely support He Dawei too.
"Damn it," Yu Duo cursed silently in her heart.
Cheng Ming seemed like a person with a cold personality, while Shen Rui was an otaku obsessed with anime characters...
For the first time, Yu Duo felt that her gender and appearance advantages were useless.
"Forget it... at least the guy has really hunted supernatural creatures before. The difference between those and some haunted remains is considerable... as long as even twenty percent of what he boasts about is true, I guess it’s fine for him to be the leader," Yu Duo comforted herself in her heart, "After all, it’s just a temporary team. I can listen to his orders, but whether I follow them is another matter."
"Since everyone is holding me in such high regard, I humbly accept," He Dawei said with a smile.
"Humbly accept? Weren’t you the one who proposed to be the team leader?" Yu Duo couldn’t help but grumble internally, feeling even more disdain towards He Dawei. For a man, although looks are important, being uncultured is also a significant deficit.
Just as He Dawei was about to say something, a commotion suddenly erupted at the back of the train car. The four of them turned their heads to see a female Hunter kneeling and coughing continuously — each cough bringing up a lot of blood with black decayed flesh. As the blood hit the floor of the car, it made a hissing sound, and a pungent acidic smell quickly spread throughout the car.
"What’s happening?" Shen Rui stood up curiously, but was held down by He Dawei.
"It’s best not to get involved right now," He Dawei whispered.
"Why... that person doesn’t seem quite right!" Shen Rui responded.
"Precisely because she’s not right, you shouldn’t approach," He Dawei said, "Look at the others, is anyone going over to help her?"
As He Dawei said, though everyone in the car was watching the woman, no one offered assistance. Those sitting near her even stood up and moved away.
The female Hunter’s strength was rapidly fading. After coughing up another mouthful of black blood, she could no longer maintain her initial kneeling position and collapsed sideways against one of the seats.
"Has anyone brought a memetic monitoring device?" a Hunter asked aloud.
"I have," another person replied, fumbling through their backpack to retrieve a device resembling a radio, extending the antenna and pointing it at the barely-breathing female Hunter.
"How’s her memetic frequency..."
"It’s chaotic! The device is returning gibberish!" the Hunter holding the monitoring device shook their head, "This isn’t good."
"Could it be that she didn’t inject the inhibitors regularly and in the correct dosage?" another Hunter speculated, "Damn it, aren’t these checks part of the entry screening? How could one slip through?"
"I’ve already notified the Public Security Bureau and the Mysterious Creature Research Institute!" a middle-aged man stated, "I’ve reported the situation here!"
"What did they say?"
"...Damn it, they’ve sealed off this train car and instructed us to control the situation until we reach the next stop," the middle-aged man said, his expression changing slightly, "They told me someone will handle it at the next station, but until then..."
"We’re on our own? Damn it!" the initial Hunter cursed, "Does anyone know this woman? Anyone her teammate?"
No one answered.
"This is trouble; we don’t even know her memetic data or capabilities..." the middle-aged man glanced towards the windows. Though the car doors were locked, the windows could still be smashed open. The "safest" way to handle this, for those on board, would be to smash the window and throw the female Hunter out...
But he couldn’t be the one to suggest this... otherwise, if the Public Security Bureau and the Research Institute investigated, he’d be the prime culprit.
"Will that woman... turn into a supernatural creature?" Shen Rui asked cautiously.
"I don’t know," He Dawei shook his head.
"What if she mutates? We had all our weapons shipped; I don’t even have a small knife on me," Shen Rui spoke anxiously, his gaze quickly sweeping over the surroundings, as if searching for something that could be used as a weapon.
"Don’t worry, if something really happens, it won’t be up to you," He Dawei said in a low voice, "This car is full of Hunters; I’m sure there are plenty who can take down a supernatural entity bare-handed. This is just one woman; even if she fully transforms, she won’t cause too much trouble."
"What if... I mean, what if..." Shen Rui rummaged through his backpack and finally pulled out a brick-like power bank and held it in his hand.
He Dawei glanced at him and said nothing more — gripping something could significantly alleviate feelings of anxiety, especially for rookie hunters like Shen Rui. The first lesson in real combat is learning to control your emotions.
